Broadcast-by-phone

posted on April 8th, 2009 ·

We just released a new feature: you can now send a message from your phone to a specified address and the message broadcast (or relayed) to the corresponding group or team.

Basics

  • You must have a phone capable of sending email, or one capable of sending TXT to an email address. Most phones will support this messaging method; some won’t (see below)
  • You are still restricted to your account’s character count limit (usually 135).  Going over this limit will result in your message being split across multiple TXTs, so Keep it short!
  • You can even send your message from any normal email account…again, Keep it short!

How it works

  1. We have set up a “dropbox” for each of your groups and/or teams that serves as a relay point
  2. We give you a unique (read: double super secret) address for this dropbox (e.g., “secretaddress@tsig.us”), which you can send at text or email to
  3. You can program this address into your phone and give it a contact name that’s the same as your group or team
  4. When you want to send a message, pick that contact and send them a text (or email)*

NOTE: The feature works with most phones.  We do not provide support for every phone known to mankind.  If you don’t know how to send a message, if your phone can do this, or how to program a contact into your phone, READ YOUR MANUAL.

iPhone & SmartPhone Users
This feature is proably less important to iPhone and SmartPhone users, as the application is fairly well supported via those phones browsers.  In fact, iPhone and Blackberry have no/limited support for the message sent to a email address.

The iPhone provides the best user experience, while the SmartPhone platforms are very capable of sending messages.  We have noted that some of the functions on a SmartPhone can have issues (viewing/editing user details, updating your account, etc), but these functions probably can be done best when your back at your desk.

Feedback
Our testing has been pretty extensive, but the real world always provides new insights, so let us know what you think.

mes⋅sage stream (that’s replies)

posted on February 4th, 2009 ·

Mes⋅sage Stream -noun

  1. A really cool new feature to TXT Signal
  2. Also known as “replies” feature; you send a message out, your contacts reply, and you can see the replies
  3. A feature that we hope all of our customers utilize

Yes, we have released the reply feature to production today.  For each group, the Message Stream will show both the outgoing (broadcast texts) and incoming (replies) messages.  The stream is grouped by day and shows the whole history, since account inception.

And, we still have some extensions of the functionality we’re working on, but it’s pretty much done.  Check it out, let us know what you think (support@txtsignal.com).
